Welsh innovators Afallen, BioPaxium Technologies, Natural Weigh and Surple have been shortlisted for this year’s Green Start-up of the Year award, in the 2019 Wales Start-up Awards.
The awards are now in their fourth year, and celebrate newer businesses that are up to three years old. The judges of the 19 categories say they are looking for “individuals who demonstrate ambition, energy, skill and vision, as well as tangible business success, in creating and developing an exceptional start-up”.
The final choice of the winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on Friday 20 September, at the Depot in Cardiff.
It will be a tough decision for the judges. Afallen is a multi-disciplinary consultancy, drawing together expertise to support sustainable communities and enterprise. Wrexham-based BioPaxium is leading the move towards sustainable food packaging, that is recyclable, biodegradable or compostable. Based in Crickhowell, Natural Weigh was the first zero waste shop to launch in Wales, and is supporting customers who want to buy foodstuffs with zero packaging, and other home products with minimal environmental impact. And Newport-based Surple has developed a smart dashboard that is already helping Newport Council reduce energy use across its schools and other properties.
